The documentary by Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom) travels the world with several of the members of The Silk Road Ensemble, an international collective of performers and composers founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma to explore how the arts can advance global understanding. In the film, Wu Man, a Grammy-nominated musician widely recognized as the world’s premiere pipa virtuoso, tells how her parents encouraged her to learn music as a child as a way to escape the pressures of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. “By trying to kill the human spirit, the answer of the human spirit is to revenge with beauty,” explains composer Osvaldo Golijov in the film.
“The clearest reason for music, for culture, is it gives us meaning,” says Ma. The film, called a "joyous revelation" by the Wall Street Journal and "...lovely to watch, even more beautiful to hear" by the New York Times, blends performance footage, personal interviews and archival film.
