Inspired by mythical tales of selkies (seal-people), the animated fantasy drama Song of the Sea follows Saoirse and her big brother Ben as they cope with loss, encounter fantastical creatures, and attempt the journey home. After the international success of his first film (The Secret of Kells, which like Song of the Sea was an Academy Award Nominee for Best Animated Film), Tomm Moore received offers from Hollywood, but he chose to stay in his hometown of Kilkenny, Ireland to work in the studio he founded with two friends. In a world of computer animation, Song of the Sea gently asserts that there is a role for the subtle beauty of hand-drawn animated films. Moore is at work on a third film based on Irish folklore, Wolfwalkers. (Tomm Moore, 2014, 93 minutes, Ireland co-production)
