Leaning into the Wind

A fascinating cinematic journey with the brilliant British land artist Andy Goldsworthy—whose maxim “You can walk along the path, or you can walk through the hedge” conveys his urge to know nature more intimately—reveals his latest artistic interventions with natural phenomena near his home. Filmmaker Thomas Ridelsheimer (whose previous study of Goldsworthy, Rivers and Tides, charmed audiences unfamiliar with this artist) manages to achieve the sublime in his new portrait, Leaning into the Wind. Goldsworthy walks us through many of his ephemeral earthworks created out of hedge, rock, reed, ice, rain, and snow, in settings both rural and urban. But it’s not only their beauty, it’s also Goldsworthy’s subtle and shrewd commentary that makes this film a breakthrough passage to a deeper understanding of the natural world. Fred Frith’s musical score accompanies. (Thomas Ridelsheimer, 2017, 93 minutes)
