The titular character of the feature animation Louise en Hiver is an elderly woman who finds herself abandoned and alone when she misses the last train at a beachfront resort town. Through sheer resourcefulness, she is able to survive through an entire winter, scrounging for supplies and food. However, her isolation brings back memories from her distant past, which the film depicts in beautifully surreal fashion. Louise deals with these memories, venturing on a personal journey within, while braving the elements around her. Inspired by the aesthetic of late nineteenth-century French painters, the film relishes in its serene, yet melancholy style and ambling pace. Louise by the Shore creates a unique, emotional tapestry that only animation can achieve. Sponsored by the Otsego Lake Association. (Jean-François Laguionie, 2016, 75 minutes, France, subtitled)
