Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki, one of the most prodigious talents in contemporary world film, has crafted in The Other Side of Hope an exceptional work of humanist cinema—witty and warm, while at the same time gently mocking his own countrymen and delivering some distressing facts about immigration and asylum seekers. Young protagonist Khaled, fleeing Syria, ends up in Helsinki in a shelter with fellow refugees. When his plea for refuge is rejected, Khaled goes on the lam. Meanwhile, Khaled’s bête noire, a would-be business owner called Wikström, drives a big vintage car and buys a small restaurant in need of renovation. Khaled and Wikström, quite naturally, have a comical first encounter. Their fates thenceforth entwine in a convoluted way that only Kaurismäki could have envisioned.  “In Kaurismaki’s work, it’s as if the masks of comedy and tragedy stare each other in the face, as if they were saying, ‘You and me, we’re in this together.’” –David Edelstein.
