Foreman Kun, his family, and their helpers (a family of migrant workers) run a plastic-recycling factory on the fringes of an industrial wasteland in China. Their dwelling is simple—their days are spent mostly on mounds of dirty imported plastic waste—but they raise a family here, decorating with colorful bits of wrapping and discarded papers and engaging in the quotidian chores of running a household, discussing school, and dreaming of new luxuries. Close by, some sheep are eating plastic trash and children are finding dead fish in the water which will later turn into a family dinner. Welcome to the world of Plastic China, a verité account of life deep within one of the industries that has fueled China’s manufacturing boom. “Director Wang Jiu-liang spent years investigating the post-consumer waste industrial systems which link China to the rest of the world (and vice versa) . . . . His unique approach to this award-winning documentary, however, remains far from didactic or inflammatory. Closely following two families over six years, this work invites us to see the universal in the ultra-personal.”— Chanel Kong (Jiu-liang Wang, 2016, China, subtitled, 96 minutes)
