Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison) is a rebellious orphan whose world is rocked after he’s placed in a foster home in the middle of nowhere in his homeland of New Zealand. After tragedy strikes this new family and he’s threatened again with abduction by a well-meaning but clueless social services agency, Ricky flees into the New Zealand wilderness. When his foster father (Sam Neill) goes after him in the bush, a national manhunt ensues, leading to rousing adventure, hilarious antics, but also a few bizarre and achingly tender moments. Stylistically, Hunt for the Wilderpeople could be described as equal parts Wes Anderson and Napoleon Dynamite. Director Taika Waititi crafts an unforgettable and fresh cinematic experience—a film with multiple layers of the notion “home”.
