Comprising roughly twenty percent of the world’s fresh water supply, the Great Lakes have for centuries been a major environmental resource with their own rich and complicated history. Project: Ice explores the allure and the lore of the Lakes, with a special focus on the enormous significance of their winter ice. Recently, with warmer water temperatures and diminished ice cover, the Lakes have become a veritable “canary in the coal mine,” warning of potential new hazards ahead.
