Angels Are Made of Light

  • Fenimore Art Museum 5798 New York 80 Cooperstown, NY, 13326 United States (map)

The moving documentary Angels Are Made of Light is a portrait of what it means to live in modern Afghanistan, a nation rebuilding after years of conflict. Filming over the course of three years, American documentarian James Longley follows the students and teachers at a school in an old neighborhood in Kabul. With his graceful cinematography, we see the people of Kabul rebuilding their lives in a city physically scarred by warfare, terror, and occupation, making visible the emotional and spiritual scars that the community bears as well. But despair is not the focus of the film. Rather, Longley finds the beauty and hope in the lives of the children who survived and will inherit this world.
