Mexico is rich with beautiful topographies and diverse ecosystems, but none is more fascinating than the cloud forest of Huatusco in Veracruz—“a hypnotic place,” according to one outsider, “a haunted landscape forever cloaked in mists and secrets.” In the small community of Huatusco, the local people, by example, instill the values for wise conservation into their children from a young age—they have no other option. This sense of working together as a community is natural for them—and they are proud to be guarding a unique biodiversity, possibly the most advanced in the world, including a species of tree that only grows in this region. The local people continually try to rearrange their needs, their food, education, and relationships with other people and with nature, always searching for a simpler life.  Sponsored by Otsego County Conservation Association. (Mónica Álvarez Franco and Carlos Sosa, 2016, Mexico, subtitled, 90 minutes)
