The Eagle Huntress

  • Fenimore Art Museum 5798 New York 80 Cooperstown, NY, 13326 United States (map)

Thirteen-year old Aisholpan, a member of the Mongolian Nurgaiv clan, practices the ancient art of eagle hunting just as the men of her family have done for generations. The fact that she happens to be the family’s first female eagle huntress has outraged older members of the Kazakh community, even though her father supports and teaches her, and takes great pride in her skill. While Aisholpan’s journey defies many of the community’s preconceived notions, the film beautifully showcases her incredible skill and buoyant spirit—all authentically documented (the director has been accused by critics and the press of staging much of the action, something he vehemently denies). The traditional Mongolian yurt (ger) in which Aisholpan lives with her family has recently been attracting converts who view it as an ecologically friendly and appealing alternative living space. Otto Bell, 2016, UK, Mongolia, USA, subtitled, 87 minutes)
