The city of Istanbul is home to thousands of cats who inhabit the streets of this ancient metropolis—a well-established tradition dating back at least as far as the Ottoman Empire. These cats of Istanbul roam freely, everywhere and anywhere, peacefully co-existing with humans who learned long ago not to assume they are the masters. Through the eyes of seven of these felines, the history and intensity of the city’s relationship with these complex animals unfolds. Far from any resemblance to typical cat footage, however, Kedi presents a brilliantly photographed and choreographed exposé, a sort of philosophical treatise of the concept of home. “The beautifully spare musical score by Kira Fontana provides the perfect accompaniment for what gradually emerges as a profoundly affecting meditation, at once dreamy and precise, on a force of nature — several forces of nature with paws and tails — surviving and thriving in an industrialized world”—Joe Leydon.   Sponsored by Susquehanna Animal Shelter. (Ceyda Torun and Charlie Wuppermann, 2016, Turkey, subtitled, 80 minutes)
