Yeon Jin Kim : Video & Props

Ted Lott: Architectural Sculpture

Curated by Megan Adams Irving and Sydney L. Waller

Journeys/En Route, offers remarkable bodies of work by two accomplished mid-career artists who share a penchant for exquisitely perfected craft and compelling visions. Both artists turn the everyday and familiar upside down and inside out, through the skillful application of a rich array of accomplished artistic disciplines. In a nod of recognition to the darkening days, we note that almost all the work in the show incorporates light in some fashion—so the show will literally glow in the dark and be visible for a few hours many evenings, even when the Smithy is closed—enlivening a Cooperstown streetscape at night.

Yeon Jin Kim, artist and filmmaker, lives in New York City and is originally from South Korea. She constructs miniature models and characters from cardboard, paper, and other materials, as props for narrative videos filmed with a hidden camera installed on a tiny train that navigates the drawings and constructions. Kim teaches at Fairleigh Dickinson University and exhibits nationally and internationally.

Ted Lott is an artist, designer and craftsperson based in Cooperstown who believes that objects can tell us a story about those who made and used them. Adopting these stories, each piece gives that history a literal and proverbial home. His work encompasses sculpture, architecture, furniture, and public art, and has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the country.

This exhibition would not have been possible without the support of a dedicated team. We would particularly like to recognize their indefatigable technical advisor, Xander Moffat, who managed the many technological challenges inherent in presenting animation video. We thank William J. Ralston, furniture maker, for creating ceiling-suspended projector platforms for the videos. We thank Janet Erway of the Cooperstown Art Association, for graciously making this wonderful unconventional space available; and we thank Karl Benner also of the Cooperstown Art Association gallery assistant, for his indispensable help with art moving. We are grateful to Doreen DeNicola of DeNicola Design for creating the striking exhibition poster. We are pleased that Peggy Parsons, Curator of Film Days, selected one of the videos in the show for the Film Days series (Migration, that can be previewed in this space.) And most especially, we thank the artists, Ted Lott and Yeon Jin Kim, for recognizing the possibilities inherent in this exciting collaboration and for being so generous throughout the exhaustive prep work for the show.
