Black Maria Film Festival, Selections of Shorts

  • Templeton Hall 63 Pioneer Street Cooperstown, NY 13326 (map)

The Black Maria is back again this year with a powerful line-up of shorts from the thirty-fifth Black Maria Festival introduced by director Jane Steuerwald. Based at New Jersey City University, the Black Maria focuses exclusively on the short form—narrative, documentary, experimental, and animation—and this year’s selection explores the theme “against the odds.” We meet a group of Syrian girls who are refugees in a camp in Jordan, a single mother trying to survive in a remote Bolivian mining camp, a joyful family composed of deaf parents with three hearing daughters, a beautiful narrative about an Afghan teenager given a burqa by her mother, and an animation featuring a pair of tree lobsters, the resilient, endangered stick insect once thought to be extinct. Films: Flower of a Thousand Colours  (Karen Vazquez Guadarrama, Belgium, 23 minutes, documentary); Matilda & Joe (Nick Gibney, USA, 7 minutes, animation); On Beat (Reid Davenport and Cheng Zhang, USA, 7 minutes, documentary); Films by Syrian Girls (Laura Doggett, USA, 22 minutes, documentary); The Gift (Tarique Qayumi, USA, 10 minutes, narrative).
