Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am

  • Fenimore Art Museum 5798 State Highway 80 Cooperstown, NY, 13326 (map)

With the recent passing of ground-breaking and widely acclaimed author Toni Morrison, this documentary celebrating her life and work feels especially poignant. Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, from filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, discusses Morrison’s novels, including The Bluest Eye, Sula and Song of Solomon, and the impact they have had on American culture. Despite their wide success, her works still invited controversy, underscoring the struggles of being a black female voice in the world of white- and male-dominated publishing. A natural storyteller, Morrison once taught students not to write about what they know, but rather to invent. Now, however, Morrison returns to her own memories of her childhood in Lorain, Ohio, studying and teaching at Howard University, going on book tours with Muhammed Ali, and attending Nobel Prize parties among others. Through the lens of her life and work, Morrison crafts a thoughtful meditation on race, America, and what it means to be human. (Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, 2019, USA, 120 minutes)
