Under the Palace Wall

  • Village Hall Ballroom 22 Main Street Cooperstown, NY 13326 United States (map)

David MacDougall, one of our best-known ethnographic filmmakers and writers, captures the past, present, and potential future of the Indian village of Delwara in Under the Palace Wall. From the 16th century, this village in southern Rajasthan was ruled as a principality of the kingdom of Mewar. Today, the palace which overlooks the village has been turned into a luxury hotel—a looming building increasingly distanced from the village. MacDougall creates a sense of place without a narrative or conventional storytelling through his compelling and at times chaotic scenes of daily life. Using precisely framed scenes and the structure of a single day, he studies Delwara’s primary school and the place it holds in contemporary village life. (David MacDougall, 2014, India, 53 minutes)
