Walking on Water

  • Fenimore Art Museum 5798 State Highway 80 Cooperstown, NY 13326 United States (map)

In 2014, five years after the passing of his wife and creative partner Jeanne-Claude, artist Christo embarked on his first solo project—"The Floating Piers,” first conceptualized by the couple in 1970 but never executed. The work involved reimagining Italy’s Lake Iseo using 100,000 square meters of brilliant yellow fabric floating just above the surface of the water, allowing people to walk on water to an island and other towns. In Walking on Water, director Andrey Paounov follows the project from preparation to installation and exhibition. Eccentric and entertaining, 83-year-old Christo navigates conflicts with officials, wins over a grade school audience, and manages the overwhelming attendance of 1.2 million people over sixteen difficult days that threaten the integrity and safety of the project. Walking on Water reveals the drive, and sometimes madness, behind Christo and his journey to self-expression after great loss. (Andrey Paounov, 2018, Italy, 104 minutes)
