Billed as the film that will “change your mind about satanism,” Hail Satan? chronicles the rise of satanism in the United States and breaks down a few misconceptions about the controversial movement. Filmmaker Penny Lane focuses in particular on the Satanic Temple, a nontheistic group based in Salem, Massachusetts, founded in 2013. The satanic imagery used by this group is more a tool than indicative of any actual belief in Satan—and the film becomes a cogent illustration of how grassroots political activism can make a difference. Using inflammatory imagery, the Satanic Temple attempts to expose the hypocrisy of a secular American state with a powerful Christian bias. While their foremost mission may be reminding the public of the importance of separation of church and state, the community advocates for much more, including issues like abortion rights. As one member states, “Satanism is looking out for the other because we are the other.” (Penny Lane, 2019, 95 minutes)
