Honeyland tells the beautiful and complicated story of Hatidze Muratova, a woman who makes a living cultivating honey using traditional beekeeping methods in the mountains of Macedonia while also caring for her ailing mother Nazife. This award-winner is the second collaboration between director Ljubomir Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska, after Lake of Apples (2017), another environmentally focused film. Spread out over three years of filming, the directorial pair captures both the beauty and hardship of Hatidze’s life. In a documentary that feels as poetic as fiction, the audience witnesses Hatidze’s conflicts with the environment as well as with her unruly, seasonal neighbors who relate to their home and the land much differently than she does. With sweet and luxurious visuals, Honeyland is a stunning tale of the push and pull of persistence and change. (Ljubomir Stefanov & Tamara Kotevska, 2019, 87 minutes)
