Jay Myself documents the massive move of renowned photographer and artist Jay Maisel, as he prepares to pack up and leave his Manhattan home of 50 years. Maisel bought his six-story, 72-room former bank building in 1966 and promptly began filling it up with what now looks like a hoarder’s trove of junk. However, through the loving eye of Maisel’s former intern turned protégé, film director Stephen Wilkes shows that Maisel’s things were more than just “things.” His objects were sacred symbols of the beauty that can be found in every object, every place, every person. With heavy doses of nostalgia and humor, Wilkes uses the logistical difficulty of this improbable relocation to meditate on the life and work of Maisel, who has the unique ability to see and capture the world’s hidden beauty.
