Hyde Bay Award for Emerging Filmmakers

Glimmerglass Film Days invites submissions for the inaugural Hyde Bay Award for Emerging Filmmakers

Eligible filmmakers may submit documentary shorts (15 minutes or less) that reflect this year’s Film Days theme of Second Nature, and/or the broader Film Days goal of highlighting films that explore humanity's complex relationship with the natural world.

For Emerging Filmmakers with ties to New York State

  • Our definition of an emerging filmmaker is someone who has not had more than three short films screened at film festivals, and who has not yet released a feature-length film. Screenings at student film festivals do not qualify.

  • Emerging filmmakers from or currently living in New York State invited to apply.

  • Emerging filmmakers whose shorts were filmed 50% or more in New York State are also invited to apply.

Up to three finalists will be selected.  Each finalist will receive a pass to attend the 14th season of Glimmerglass Film Days, November 11-15 in Cooperstown, NY. Finalists also will receive travel assistance and accommodations. Finalists will enjoy five days of films, related events, and connect with filmmakers and film enthusiasts. The finalists will have their films shown at Film Days and participate in a Q&A with the audience. The winner will be announced at Film Days after the Q&A.

Finalists will be selected by members of the Film Days Steering Committee: Xander Moffat, independent producer and Film Days programmer and technical director; Peter Hutchison, award-winning filmmaker, bestselling author, educator, and activist; and JoAnn Gardner, a strong advocate for the importance of film in the classroom, who has worked on a number of commercials, movies, and television shows.

Finalists will each receive:

  • Glimmerglass Pass, Value $295

  • Up to $400 Travel Stipend

  • Up to 5 nights accommodation in Cooperstown, value $1000

The Hyde Bay Award for Emerging Filmmakers is made possible through the generosity of an anonymous donor and film enthusiast.
